Module 12 - Managing Uncertainty in the Consultation
Managing Uncertainty in the Consultation
Every clinician experiences those “What do you do when you don’t know what to do?” moments. This moments happen to clinicians at all levels of experience and in all areas of practice. Uncertainty is pervasive in clinical work, partly because no one practitioner has ALL the skills to do everything, and also because of the intrinsic uncertainty about early, vague or undifferentiated symptoms and the uncertainty about how each individual will respond to treatment. In this series uncertainty is examined from the clinician and the patient point of view, pitfalls and dysfunctional was out are described, and uncertainty is classified into different types. Different kinds of uncertainty can be resolved with different skills, which are outlined here. Further information is available in our book Mapping Uncertainty in medicine; what do you do when you don’t know what to do? Each section includes a discussion with a variety of colleagues, from a GP in their first five years post qualification, to senior GP Educators and even a professor of philosophy. Doctor Phil Hammond joins in the introductory section to give his unique take on uncertainty. There are 25 podcasts to be published between December 2023 and May 2024.
